Tell us about what you do.
As an Aircrew Specialist, I execute the role of a Loadmaster on board the C-130. We are the eyes and ears of the flight deck crew as we are in charge of everything that goes inside the cargo compartment of the aircraft. Part of our job is to conduct training flights to hone our skills for Airdrops, Military Freefall, Search-And-Locate, as well as Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief missions.
What is the best part about being an Aircrew Specialist?
During COVID-19, we were sending medical supplies to neighbouring countries. Being part of that mission made me appreciate the life I have, and gave me a deep sense of satisfaction to serve humanity in a small way.
Have there been moments when you were afraid?
In an Airdrop mission, when the aircraft is manoeuvring at high speeds, one experiences a gravitational force twice your bodyweight. On my first mission, having to conduct checks and combat air sickness at the same time was definitely a challenge. However, after a couple of flights I adapted to the operating environment and qualified as a Loadmaster.
Why did you choose to join the RSAF?
I grew up around siblings in uniform. My brothers were in the Navy and Army, and my sister is in the Singapore Police Force. The Aircrew Specialist vocation of the RSAF suited my character and aspirations, as it is a good mix of hands-on and desk-bound roles. It also gives me the opportunity to travel and understand work cultures of different countries.
What does ‘Above All’ mean to you?
Personally, ‘Above All’ signifies the high standards to which the RSAF holds itself. We aim high and do not settle for anything less than a hundred percent. This philosophy is our guide not just in missions, but also in life.
Any advice for aspiring airwomen?
If I had a sister who wanted to join the RSAF, I would tell her to work on her fitness levels. One of the fundamental requirements here is to be in a good physical condition. While the RSAF will train you up when you join, having an early head start helps. Trainings can be demanding, and it is important to meet the required standards. Our readiness during a mission depends on it.
