About Vaccines Manufacturing

In this highly scientific Manufacturing operations and quality (Vaccines) function we manufacture, formulate, fill, pack, control, release and deliver vaccines safely – a process that takes 15 to 18 months using cutting-edge technology. It’s a challenge that touches on four very different activities: manufacturing operations, technical services, quality and supply chain management. Different challenges arise at every stage, so every working day is different. These challenges might include transporting delicate biological materials that need special handling, overseeing quality throughout the manufacturing process, or managing a complex supply chain to ensure that vaccines are received exactly when they’re needed.

Develop your career

Over two years, our Future Leaders graduate programme will challenge and support you to grow professionally and personally. You’ll have stretching rotations that will give you an insightful experience into the manufacturing side of our vaccines business. Through these placements, you’ll develop your expertise in production, quality and technical services or supply chain management, while broadening your global business perspective.

What will you do?

GSK Vaccines is on a journey to enable ease of use and fast time to market on both systems and development processes and is making fundamental technological and innovative shifts that will enable this journey.

To achieve this objective, Manufacturing Science & Technology (MSAT) department has been created to focus on the potential of science to address the unmet needs of patients. GSK commits to those areas where the company thinks we can really change the course of medicine and bring big new ideas to life.

As part of the MSAT team, you will be responsible for the following business areas :

  • Manufacturing support of commercial operations and clinical cGMP Manufacturing,
  • Drug substances process development from the research stage, through clinical development, marketing approval, commercial production and drug substance supply globally,
  • Product life cycle management of the registered products,
  • Introduction of new products and new technologies and regulatory launch,
  • Product strategy and site registration,
  • Knowledge management.

You will have the opportunity to manage the entire lifecycle of products manufactured at GSK Tuas from inception, through engineering design and manufacture, to service and disposal of manufactured products. Together with other MSAT Engineers and Scientists, you will need to maintain oversight and ownership of all changes related to product (i.e. process change, raw material change that has potential impact to product & process) with the end to end view from incoming materials to finished product. You will also be involved in implementing and maintaining the control strategy for drug substance production and introducing lifecycle changes.

In addition, the department has been increasing its focus on Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), which is a business transformation approach to manage products and related information across the enterprise. In recent years PLM has provided many pharmaceutical organizations with the ability to increase their ability to get products to market quicker, ensure greater regulatory compliance and efficiencies while reducing development costs.

On top of your day-to-day responsibilities, you will get the chance to work on mid to long term project work in the development of analysis, interpretation, and visualisation of process and product data. This includes the use of statistical analysis techniques to aid in monitoring of process and equipment robustness.

Other development opportunities you can get involved in:

  • Provide technical assistance to commercial manufacturing team, including change assessment, process monitoring, troubleshooting and continuous improvement,
  • Drive process lifecycle management for continuous improvement of biologics drug substance manufacturing,
  • Provide technical oversight of our commercial products and processes with an end to end view and throughout their lifecycle,
  • Monitor process performance and product quality with Continuous Process Verification cycle,
  • Review and analysis process trending and identify changing quality trends and issues. Read and interpret statistical diagrams, drawings, and other schematics. Monitor processes for performance and problem indicators,
  • Ensure the robustness of manufacturing processes so that all site products are validated and remain in constant state of validation throughout the product lifecycle,
  • Apply appropriate change management methods to promote implementation of technology changes. Facilitate organizational change by helping to prepare personnel to accept and actively participate in new changes, through communication, coaching, and educational workshops.

You’ll be excited by the thought of:

  • Get a good understanding of all areas of our Vaccines business on a tailored development programme
  • Discover how manufacturing, the quality function, process science and supply chain work together
  • Learn about the cutting-edge technologies used in vaccines manufacturing
  • Follow our vaccines through the entire manufacturing process
  • Gain valuable people management experience or exposure
  • Learn about the challenges of working in a highly regulated and controlled environment
  • Be part of a diverse network, working with graduates from all over the world

Our Future Leaders programme is designed to accelerate the development of graduates who don’t have significant previous professional work experience in the area to which they are applying.  Of course, many graduates who join the programme have worked while studying or after graduation.  If you’ve already developed substantial experience working in a professional role in your sector, while you would be able to apply for this programme, you may also want to look at direct entry roles in our businesses, as these may be the best way to build on your existing skills and expertise and develop a career at GSK.
