My company and my job

I’m part of the M&E (Mechanical & Electrical) Design Management team where I assist to look after and manage the M&E design across CapitaLand’s portfolio, be it retail, commercial, residential, service residences and integrated development. At the same time, I am also part of the Centre of Innovation team where I source and test out new digital technology that can assist with the energy management, operations and maintenance of CapitaLand’s buildings.

Both roles have given me the opportunity to learn how to design and build good quality buildings, yet at the same time explore and push the boundaries to develop smarter and safer buildings.

How I got my job

I applied to CapitaLand through the BCA-CapitaLand Built Environment Undergraduate Scholarship before entering NTU. Then, I had to go through one aptitude test and four rounds of interviews, of which the final interview was with the President & Group CEO. Upon graduation, I was given the opportunity to join CapitaLand’s Graduate Development Programme.

The highs and lows

I like the fact that I have the opportunity to explore new possibilities and ideas, yet at the same time receive mentorship and guidance from my bosses and colleagues. From having honest and open communication with the team, there is a generation of new ideas. At the same time, I get good advice and help from my other experienced colleagues.

When exploring new ideas, new technology or even new work processes, there are bound to be challenges. It is common for stakeholders or end users to be less receptive at the start. However, their feedback is crucial as it gives us insights to fine-tune the innovation and strengthen the case to use it for the business.

Training and support

I participated in the CapitaLand Immersion Programme. It is a three-day course where I got to understand the company’s core values as well as gain an understanding of the different business units. Along the way, I had signed up for courses through CapitaLand’s internal learning institute, CapitaLand Institute of Management and Business (CLIMB), to further enhance my knowledge in real estate, as well as develop personal skills. On top of that, I have also attended a few external technical courses to sharpen my M&E training. Of course, nothing beats on-the-job training.

Work-life balance

I believe discipline is crucial to achieve work-life balance. This discipline refers to two things – continuous reminders to find ways to be more efficient at work, as well as the continuous effort to be mindful of the task at hand.

The first would allow me to tackle my tasks faster and find more time for myself. While the second would allow me to continuously be in the right mindset – to stay focused when working, and to have proper rest during personal time. Hence, this would allow me to put in my best effort during work, yet still have quality time for personal matters.

Some advice

As the saying goes, “the only thing constant is change”. Hence, keep an open mind and do not be afraid to fail. Always be ready to pick yourself up, dust off, and humbly learn from others. With the right attitude and discipline, I believe everyone can achieve success in their career of choice.
