Software Engineering Team Lead
Melissa studied at Singapore Management University (SMU).
My company and my job
I am currently working as the delivery lead and product owner for a high tech client looking after a managed service for the Finance Non-Discretionary System. We are maintaining their current finance related systems which spans across various applications like SAP Finance (FI), Sales (SD), Business Planning and Consolidation (BPC), Business Warehouse (BW), ABAP, Business Objects (BO) and Ariba. The objective of our team is to enable systems landscape for new legal entities setups required for both M&A and strategic opportunities, meet Tax and Audit compliance requirements to minimize audit and legal risk and to enhance financial reporting to maintain accurate and effective reporting.
My work requires me to help remove roadblocks for my developers, prioritizing product backlog with the business users, liaise with users to get requirements and ensuring timely updates to key stakeholders of the project. When an item goes live, there is a sense of accomplishment within our team as we have delivered a product, which will benefit and add value to our end customers, the user.
I start the day by checking my emails from the users because the ones I work with are in different time zones, so I need to catch up on items, which come in overnight. Before starting on any actual work, I will prioritize and compile my to-do list for the day so I can focus on the must-do items. Doing this ensures I can manage my work hours and reduce the amount of overtime needed.
How I got my job
I joined Accenture as a graduate trainee and have been here since.
The highs and lows
I have mainly been in the Communications, Mass Media and High Technology space focusing on testing (SIT and UAT). By staying within the same industry, I was able to build in depth knowledge about the telecommunications industry and technical understanding of how the application is customized and built for this specific industry. I have also learnt to manage and handle users, honing and building on soft skills related to communications, reporting and presentation. These skills come in very handy as I move from project to project, as it is not technology or industry specific.
A hectic day will include back to back online and face to face meetings which starts at 7.30AM in the morning so we can cater to both US and EMEA time zones) and end with late night meetings which start at 11.00PM in the night. As we are following the agile methodology, we have planned daily sync up calls amongst the onshore (Singapore) and offshore (India) developers.
I love to travel and take pictures. I have travelled to exotic places like Dubai and Egypt to more conventional places like Paris, London, New York, New Zealand and many more. I like the sense of unknown and freedom of time when travelling, the ability to not worry about timelines and schedules, to let my hair down and capture the beauty of the location I am travelling in.
I have recently picked up golf and love travelling to nearby countries like Bintan and Batam to have a few rounds of 18-holes with my friends. With this sport, I am able to combine my love of travelling whilst still enjoying the sport and company of my friends.
